Visions of a darker sort than dancing sugar plums were behind much of this new Alcool 68 album, cooked up during the holidays in November and December of 2018. "Untied States" is a sweep across the sprawling fields of American dystopia, where the familiar distorts and the ugly rises to the surface. Not so much a document of the future as a weird-trip view to the present minus perceptual blinders, the album presents music in meltdown, not unlike great swaths of the society that once experienced it before Alcool 68's sonic funhouse trickery was unleashed on it. "Untied States" is a soundtrack for dark nights with the TV on some endless news feed with the sound off and the jaundiced sodium-vapor glow of the cityscape softly gleaming through the windows from a bleak, overcast sky...a suitable background for the defective carnival ride that the USA has become in this Year of Our Lord 2018.
